Discover My Latest Perth Solo Show

In July, 2025, Perth contemporary artist Karina Buckingham will host her second solo exhibition, Evergreen, at Gallows Gallery in Mosman Park. Featuring approximately 20 new and original works, the collection stunningly portrays the pure majesty, undeniable dynamism and incredible diversity of West Australian eucalyptus trees. Deriving inspiration from her physical encounters and metaphysical responses to these trees on her walks through city parks and state forests, each work encapsulates the childlike wonder, gratitude and sense of safety Karina experiences in the presence of these natives. Regarding each work as the depiction of a different segment or story of a walk, the collection profoundly invokes the sensations of wandering the WA woodlands, while showcasing the extraordinary value of these trees to our ecosystem, iconic landscape and quality of life.
Painting the collection over a six-month period, each work has been artistically and conceptually formulated through Karina’s playful and innovative creative process. Working exclusively from memory and imagination, her improvised works begin with a bright base colour of red, pink or orange which is then layered with an array of green tones. These palettes are applied with a variety of tools such as brushes, spatulas, rags and greaseproof paper, and are later scrapped, sanded, dripped and pooled, both on and off the easel, to achieve organic colour changes and visual texture. These areas of high impact paint work are strategically contrasted by solid, more soothing areas of colour, typically depicting the forest path or sky, and are integrated into the work in its finishing stages. This painting process ensures each piece appears calming and harmonious from the onset but, when viewed closely, contains boundless discoveries of detail, colour and compositional surprises that are guaranteed to astonish and enthral viewers.
Evergreen opens at Gallows Gallery, located at 53 Glyde Street, Mosman Park, on Friday 4th July, with doors opening at 6pm. The exhibition will continue until Sunday 13th July and will be open from Tuesday to Thursday from 10am – 4pm, Saturday from 11am – 3pm and Sunday from 2pm– 4.30pm. Karina will be sharing more about her inspiration and her process on Sunday 6th July at 3pm, in conversation with Interior Designer and Art Ambassador Andrew Thornton Hick.
