Which is right for you?
Some artists offer both original paintings and fine art prints, and if those prints are professionally photographed, colour matched and reproduced using archival quality inks and paper/canvas this can be quite a confusing decision to make...and its not always about your budget!
Read below for my thoughts on all the factors you should be thinking about...
Things to consider...
What's your budget? can you afford an original by your favourite artist or would a print more suit your budget right now.
What size of artwork you need - sometimes the original painting you love is just too big or too small for your space? a print can offer you flexibility of size.
Is this for your own home, a holiday home, a short term let, AirBnB, or office? You may not want to hang an original painting in a holiday home that is rented out and could get damaged.
Which room in the house is the artwork going to live? Is it for a key living area, an entrance hall or master bedroom where you'd ideally like to display a precious original or a statement painting? Or a minor area, like a spare room, playroom study or bathroom, where you want to have all the benefits of beautiful art but at a more affordable price?
Is there an original available now that you love?
If not, will the artist create a commissioned original in your chosen size and image? Its unlikely that this will be an identical copy. If not then maybe you will have to wait for them to create more paintings, or if you want certainty, choose a print instead?
Is there already a sold original you love that's offered as a print?
What look are you wanting for your fine art print? Framed paper print behind glass, or as a stretched and framed canvas that looks more like an original? With either format of print you will get to choose the frame finish and style to suit your interior.
So you see, there's lots of factors at play, but I hope that's helped with your decision making and understanding of when to choose an original or a print.
Please let me know if theres any factors that I've missed.
